So – if you’re doing keyword research, where should you begin? Unless you’re an affiliate marketer you already have a product and since you’re the target audience of this article – I’m going to assume that’s the case. For the purpose of this article I’m going to pick a hobby of mine and also an area where I don’t have a client and imagine I’m doing keyword research for the imaginary online downhill mountain biking store, DH Mountain Bikes.
So Where To Begin …
The first thing one needs to do is try to think up all the possible phrases that might apply. I call this my seed list… it’s the list of phrases that my research starts with and is generally based on brainstorming. In this case the list would be:
downhill mountain bike
dh mountain bike
mountain bike
The keyword tool I generally use first is Google’s keyword suggestion tool. There are other great tools but I’ve found Google’s tool to be as accurate as any other, the price is definitely right (free), and they’re very good about providing the information required to know just how wrong the data is if you know where to look. So let’s do just that.
Before we begin you’ll need to head over to Google’s keyword tool at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. In the top left (for now) you’ll see a link to a beta version of the tool. Click on the link and you’ll be at the new version of the tool which will provide you easy access to much more information – as long as you know what to look for. So let’s begin with our three seed phrases.
When you see the list you’ll first have to know what the numbers are. This tool is a tool designed for AdWords and the default number is the Broad match which means it includes every phrase with the term. For example, the term “mountain bike” has a broad match total of 2,740,000 which will include “downhill mountain bike”, “mountain bike parts”, “kona mountain bike”, etc. etc.
What we want to know is how many searches are for “mountain bike”. Down the left-hand side you’ll see a set of check boxes. Deselect “Broad” and select “Exact” and you’ll get the Exact match numbers – the number of searches for the exact phrase. You’ll quickly see that 2,740,000 drop to 450,000. This is how many people searched the GOOGLE SEARCH NETWORK for “mountain bike”. Why is this in caps – because it’s so commonly misunderstood that I definitely want your attention brought to it. This isn’t the number of searches on Google.com – it’s the number of searches on all sites whose search is powered by Google. From YouTube to Beanstalk’s blog search – it’s all in there so the data starts to get skewed from the start. Then let’s add in all the automated queries from rank-checking tools and just manual searches from you and your competitors and the data gets further skewed. This skewing will exist in all data – the thing I like about using Google is that at least we know more about what’s adjusting the data.
OK – so from there we need to organize the data into a more useful set of information. To do this one needs to understand the columns of data. The first column is the keyword, the second you’ll see is a link to the term on Google Insights. We’ll get into this later. The next is Global Monthly Searches – this is the average number of searches/mo. worldwide. This can be helpful in some industries but in ours – I’m only concerned with the US market which is where my imaginary store ships to so I’m more interested in the next column Local Monthly Searches which is the number of searches in the US (or whatever region I’ve specified when entering my keyword phrases). This is the data I’m interested in. The last column is the search trend. This is extremely important but often overlooked. It is a column that wasn’t visible by default in the old/current version.
OK – let’s organize our data by search volume. Click on the “Local Monthly Searches” and you’ll see the keywords order by descending search volume. With this data in front of me I then typically look over to the Trend data to see what I can find there. In our case we’re going to see an increase in search volume in the spring and summer. This make sense of course. Think of your industry and see if the trends reflect what makes sense.
I’m also looking for anomalies. Often I’ll see phrases that jump for a single month. One has to know that unless there was a news story or other event that would spark interest in a single term or brand – a tool or some other such incident is likely falsifying the data. You need to look at these trends and see if they make sense. If not – you need to either test the phrases with PPC or just skip over them and select different phrases. There’s little worse as an SEO than focusing energies on a phrase only to find that the search volume is not what was expected based on the estimates delivered.
So now what?
So what do you do once you’ve filtered your data down to just what you’re interested in looking into competition levels on. Well – the first thing I do is to look to the trends to see if there are any phrases that obviously need to be filtered out. In this case there really aren’t any high in the search volume column. So the only thing left is to look at the competition levels to see what makes sense. For our purposes we’ll be dividing the list and research into two categories:
Major phrases – We need to decide what the long-term goals are going to be and the targets for the main pages. These will be the totally generic phrases such as “mountain bike” and “downhill mountain bike” as well as brand or type specific phrases such as “specialized mountain bike” and “full suspension mountain bike”.
Longtail phrases – We also need to look into the types of longtail phrases we’re going to want to target. In this case I know I’ll want to target specific parts which will require new research. I will spare you the details there, but I’ll end up with specific models of components such as “hayes mx2″. You don’t need to know what that is - you need to know the makes and models in your industry (or other longatil opportunities such as “new york hotel with jacuzzi”, etc.)
I generally would gather together a list of 15 or 20 major phrases and 50 or 60 longtail phrases and would then head into the competition analysis to determine which phrases to move forward with.

How to Write Search Engine Friendly Articles
Using Google Adwords Keyword Tool to Write Search Engine Friendly Articles
You just type in your long tail keyword in the box, check off the "descriptive words or phrases" and the "use synonyms", do your captcha (we all hate those) and hit the "Get keyword ideas" button.
Now Google will generate a list of keyword phrases that it thinks applies to your long tail keyword phrase. This keyword list is the key to your article success.
What Google is essentially telling you is that if you have information on a particular subject (your keyword phrase) and are providing a good product for Google's customers then your page content will have these words in it as well as your chosen long tail keyword phrase.
You are not going to use every phrase in the list and using them nonsensically throughout your article will do you no good either. I generally choose one or two of these keyword phrases per paragraph, usually from the top five on the list. I then write my article to incorporate these keywords into the content in a logical, reader friendly way.
Some SEO experts throw out the number of a 3% ratio for your long tail keyword to appear in your article content. Unless you plan on doing a lot of word counting and math that one is hard to figure out sometimes. I am going to show you the trick I use and it seems to work like a charm.
10 SEO Tips for Writing Search Engine Friendly Articles
1: Make sure your longtail keyword is in your title and any head tags on your website (or article).
2: Don't forget your meta tags and description. Use your keyword phrase in your description and tags and use the selected keywords from the Google list as tags too.
3: Your top keyword phrases should appear in your first paragraph (preferably the first line)
4: Your targeted keyword phrase should appear in your last paragraph. (preferably the last line)
5: Depending on the length of your article, you may safely include your long tail keyword phrase one or two more times somewhere in the middle of the article.(skip this if it is a short article)
6: Each paragraph of your article should have a separate point. Use the keyword phrases to make your point and write the rest of the paragraph to support that one point.
7: Do not use keywords in every sentence unless they are appropriate as you are also writing for your readers.
8: Use the keywords as anchor text for any links in your article.
Do not overload your article with keywords. That is called keyword spamming and is a BIG no-no in Google's eyes.
9: Use numbered or bullet lists as a way of incorporating the Google generated keywords into your article.
10: When you use these SEO guidelines your readers will not feel like they are being slapped in the face with your chosen keyword phrase and will look forward to reading your next article. You will write search engine friendly articles that will perform better in Google's search engine positioning and you will get a better content quality score as well.

Are You Considering Alexa Rank to Determine Quality Score of a Website?
Alexa Ranking is used as a score card by many advertisers to determine whether or not to advertise on a particular website. This article will help you decide whether to consider alexa rank for estimating the quality score of a website.
How Alexa Ranks a Website?
According to Wikipedia, Alexa Internet, Inc. is a California-based subsidiary company of Amazon.com that is known for its toolbar and website. Once installed, the toolbar collects data on browsing behavior which is transmitted to the website where it is stored and analyzed and is the basis for the company’s web traffic reporting.
See what happens here (Facts about Alexa):
Alexa actually ranks websites based on the toolbar tracking.
I have an entertainment blog which had an Alexa Rank of 1,05,268 with an average of 2000 unique visitors daily. I have a friend who has a site with an AlexaRank of 45,025 which is a very high rank when compared with my site.
We’ve analyzed the traffic status for the last 30 days. He is getting only 800 unique visitors per day (in the same niche).
The report indicated that my site outperformed his blog by double the number of his total visitors, but the Alexa Rank for his site is higher than mine. So, Do you feel Alexa Rank should not be used to determine the overall traffic ranking of the websites or should it be weighed more?
Let me explain!
As per Google Analytics, there are 3 types of traffic indicators.
Direct Traffic: This is the traffic where the visitors come directly to our website either by bookmarking our site or by remembering its URL if they find the content interesting. This type of web traffic will convert very well.
Referral Traffic: This is the traffic coming from other sources (other websites, can be ours too) such as social bookmarking sites, Social networking sites like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter etc… According to my experience, most people will receive highest traffic percentage through this referral sites if you actively participate in social networks.
Search Engines: This is the free traffic that we get from search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, Altavista etc… This is the traffic what every webmaster, SEO Professional and Professional Blogger always dream about.
So, we should rely only on real statistics than the estimated traffic (Alexa) to determine the authority of a website. There are many free tools like Google Analytics, Sitemeter and many more…which provide you with real data. If someone wants to advertise on your website, he should request this data before making an investment.
So, Don’t worry about Alexa Ranks (even if it is high or low) if you are getting good number of unique visitors/day and your bounce rate is < 40%.
Now what you do? Start analyzing your Analytics Data Vs Alexa Traffic Status.
Do share your opinions in comments.

Being Direct About Social Media Marketing
Compared to typical direct marketing efforts (snail mail, DRTV, email, etc) where an offer is created based on a company developing a product and packing it to meet a need or purpose, a social media marketing program will focuses on creating awareness, relationships and possibly involving communities with creating the offer before it’s every promoted.
As a comparison, take a look at what a typical direct marketing program might look like:
· Develop top level messaging
· Research and build an email list
· Acquire snail mail lists and segment
· Create and implement a series of email offers to the list with landing pages
· Create and implement a series of direct mail pieces
· Setup and run PPC campaign(s) with landing pages
· Craft story and press releases
· Research publications for planned stories and journalists covering the topic
· Distribute optimized press releases via wire services
· Pitch story to industry and regional publications, editors/journalists
· Leverage coverage from pitching as part of final email promotions
· Solicit feedback from those signing up and use as testimonials for subsequent promotions
The list could go on and on really, depending on the budget, timeline and objectives. From the perspective of a traditional marketer, it seems pretty logical, right? It’s a straightforward marketing campaign based on developing an offer, defining a target audience and creating a series of messages intended to communicate the offer and convert. It also uses public relations to augment direct marketing efforts in addition to leveraging positive feedback for subsequent promotions.
While the above overview marketing plan is pretty straight forward, it runs contrary in many ways to the kind of digital marketing programs that companies the world over are warming up to: Social Media Marketing.
With social media marketing, there is an assumption that there is already involvement with the social communities involved – profile(s), network of friends, content submission, voting and participation. That’s the big mistake most marketers make when trying to promote products and services on the social web. They’ll create an account on a social media site, put up some content and expect the social media world to be their oyster without having built a network first.
So, what would a social media marketing focused program look like as an alternative to the direct marketing promotion above? Â Let’s take a look:
· Monitor discussion on social communities and networks for key conversations, keywords and topics
· Identify top concerns relevant to what the company is promoting and develop messaging for solution
· Identify influentials in the social communities, bloggers and authorities – ask them their opinion
· Identify media types most often used with topics and communities – text, video, image, podcast as well platforms for communication: blog posts, comments, microblogging, status updates, social network notes, social news and bookmarking and as possible, direct messaging and IM
· Create messaging specific to media type and platform as way of sharing information about the offer
· Create content destinations that explain the offer and that also offer the opportunity to interact, share opinions and comments – blog posts, video, event pages on social networks (like a landing page, but focused on being informative and encouraging discussion, not salesey)
· Reach out to influentials on a one to one basis, recognizing them for sharing their opinion, explaining the offer and your goals – ask them to join in in spreading the good word. Explain what’s in it for them and what’s in it for the community.
· Monitor the communications that result in the most signups and provide feedback on progress
· Offer influential bloggers a “free pass” to blog the event or a preview of what’s being offered
· Recognize participation and contribution to reaching goals
· Continue to engage interested participants and communities
Seems like a lot of work and possibly more effort than it’s worth to a traditional direct marketer. But to those involved with social media and social communities, it’s familiar territory. Focusing on developing solutions based on what the audience wants, then involving the community in developing and promoting creates evangelists for the promotion. Recognizing participation energizes the community and can multiply the speed and breadth of message distribution, discussion and action.
Social marketing invests in social communities with useful content/solutions as well as participation and recognition. That investment delivers long term dividends far beyond a one time promotional program using direct marketing tactics.
If the budget, timeline and resources warrant it, a combination of both sets of tactics can be very appropriate.

Importance of Backlinking in SEO - How you get quality Backlinks?
Importance of Backlinking in SEO
Building Quality Links pointing to your site site will make Google to understand the importance of the site and it helps to increase the ranking of your website in SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages).
More the backlinks aimed at your blog, more the credibility of the blog. There are even more ranking factors in SEO other than Link Building. But we will discuss those in our future posts. Let’s go one after one.
What are Backlinks and Uses of Link Building?
Backlinks are nothing but the links that are linked to your website or blog. Backlinks are also called as incoming/inbound links. The importance of Back Links in SEO is high because more the backlinks, more the chance your website ranks top in the search engines. All the Top search engines have already included the backlinks factor in their search algorithm to decide the credibility of websites.
So Do you think that all the links coming from other sites is enough to make your blog to the top of the search engines?
No! There is a twist here! Because the more number of incoming links doesn’t imply that you should go for building links continuously submitting to web directories and blog directories. It’s the number of quality backlinks that these Search Engines take in to consideration to credit your website or blog. So now you may get the doubt!
Points to Remember while doing Link Building:
1. Webmasters/SEO’s often try to create more websites and link them from one to one to generate more backlinks. This is a good idea only if your websites are not on the same IP address. Remember that Google is far beyond our imagination and it can easily catch you and impose ban on your site.
2. Reciprocal Link Building is the most used backlink techniques of today. When you exchange link with a popular and trustworthy blog/website, then it will definitely benefit you. However if you link back to any bad website (which is a spam website or got banned by Google), then it kills SEO. So always make sure you build links between authority as well as related sites.
3. Another interesting and most effective backlink technique is the 3-way Link Building Technique.
Ex: Website A give a link back to Website B, Website B links back to website C and Website C to website A. Using this method, you will not fall into the scheme of link farm as all the links between these three sites are One Way Links which are trusted more by the search engines.
So I think you got the basic idea of Link Building now! We’ll discuss “How to Get High Quality Backlinks?” in our next post. Stay Tuned. Do Share your Views.
What are Quality backlinks?
Backlinks that come from other sites that are related to the content of your blog is a quality link. Suppose Google SEO Blog is a blog where you can find the topics related to Search Optimization, Content Writing, SEM, Link Building etc… Now if this site gets backlinks from any finance or entertainment related blogs, then it will be of no use as this type of link is not considered as a Quality backlink as the sites linking to me are not related to my niche. Now you get the point, Right! You should try to build links from relevant sites. For example the link coming from any SEO blog is more likely to have good effect on my blog.

Website promotion, phase three - More techniques
After being accepted into the largest directories and having pages of your site come up in answer to searches done at the major search engines, the long hours that you've spent on website promotion have begun to pay off and your daily visitor count is starting to look good. But there is still plenty you can do to help your site attract even more traffic.
In phase three, we'll examine different promotion methods that you might want to try. However, in order to prevent you from wasting your time on things that don't work, we'll also go over a few techniques that have proven to be less than spectacular when I experimented with them.
Step one - Keep these in mind
First, let's take a look at the good stuff. The articles introduced in this step are about the website promotion methods that are at least partially effective. Some of them work better than others, but if used correctly, all of them can produce results that will be worth your while. Of course, most of the articles include advice on what you need to do to obtain the best possible results with the method discussed.
1. If you sell something on your site, you might want to try banner ads. Usually banner campaigns are seen as expensive and ineffective, but it is partially because advertisers don't know how to design good banners.
2. Read the article on how to increase traffic with return visitors. Getting people to come back is the secret to why some sites get amazingly many hits per day.
3. Learn what reciprocal links are and how to get them, then put that knowledge into use. In addition to sending you visitors, reciprocal links will also increase your link popularity and help your site rank higher in the search engines.

Step two - Forget these
As said, everything just doesn't always work the way it should in the world of promotion. In step two, our attention is focused on website promotion methods that are more trouble than they are worth. 3. Winning website awards can occasionally be useful, especially if the awards are well-known. However, sometimes the winner of the award is not the real winner.
Final words

Some of them work better than others, but if used correctly, all of them can produce results that will be worth your while. Of course, most of the articles include advice on what you need to do to obtain the best possible results with the method discussed.
1. If you sell something on your site, you might want to try banner ads. Usually banner campaigns are seen as expensive and ineffective, but it is partially because advertisers don't know how to design good banners.
